A Week in Uppsala: Discovering the Heart of Sweden
Sweden has always intrigued me, with its blend of rich history, beautiful landscapes, and a modern yet charming vibe. This time, my travels led me to Uppsala, a place brimming with both ancient stories and contemporary energy. As I stepped off the train and into this charming Swedish city, I knew this would be more than just another trip. The week ahead promised a perfect mix of culture, nature, and moments of peaceful reflection.
Day 1: A Stroll Through Uppsala’s Historic Core
Arriving in Uppsala feels like stepping into a timeless blend of medieval and modern. My first stop was the iconic Uppsala Cathedral—a towering gothic structure that stands as the centerpiece of the city. As I gazed up at the cathedral’s spires, I couldn’t help but marvel at its immense beauty and historical significance. It’s the largest church in Scandinavia, and walking through its grand nave, I felt both humbled and awed by its history. The cathedral houses several notable tombs, including those of Swedish kings, as well as the famous botanist Carl Linnaeus.
After exploring the cathedral, I wandered through the Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala) district. Known for its ancient burial mounds, this area is one of the most important archaeological sites in Sweden. The burial mounds were once the resting places of Viking kings, and standing there, I could almost feel the echoes of history.
For lunch, I stopped at a cozy café near Stora Torget, the central square. Swedish fika—coffee paired with pastries—became a daily ritual on my trip, and here, I tried a kanelbulle (cinnamon bun), which paired wonderfully with my cup of coffee.

Day 2: The Legacy of Linnaeus
I had always been fascinated by Carl Linnaeus, the father of modern taxonomy, and Uppsala is the perfect place to learn about his legacy. Linnaeus’ Garden was a highlight of my day. The garden, which he created in the 18th century, showcases over a thousand plant species and serves as a living testament to his work. Walking through the garden, surrounded by beautiful flowers and plants from around the world, I marveled at Linnaeus’ dedication to understanding the natural world.
Next, I visited the Linnaeus Museum, located in his former home. The museum offers a deeper dive into his life and work, with personal items, manuscripts, and even his famous botanical collection. It was amazing to see the place where so many of his groundbreaking ideas took shape.
In the evening, I walked along the Uppsalaå river. The peaceful waterway was lined with lush greenery and charming wooden houses. It was the perfect spot to reflect on the day, with the soft glow of the setting sun casting a golden hue over the city.
Day 3: A Day Trip to Sigtuna
On my third day, I decided to take a short trip to Sigtuna, a quaint town located just 30 minutes from Uppsala. This picturesque town, often considered Sweden’s oldest, is known for its charming cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and beautiful lakeside views. It felt like a place frozen in time.
My first stop in Sigtuna was St. Mary’s Church, a medieval church that has stood since the 12th century. Its peaceful interior and beautiful stained glass windows made it a perfect place for a moment of quiet contemplation. Afterward, I strolled along the main street, lined with boutique shops and cafés, where I enjoyed a Swedish kardemummabulle (cardamom bun) with my afternoon coffee.
In the afternoon, I visited the Sigtuna Museum, which showcases the town’s rich history, including its Viking past. The museum’s exhibits offered fascinating insights into the early days of Sweden, with a focus on the Viking Age and the town’s significance as a trading hub.
Before heading back to Uppsala, I took a walk by Lake Mälaren, enjoying the serene waters and the gentle breeze. It was the perfect way to end a peaceful day trip from the city.
Day 4: Uppsala’s Modern Vibe
While Uppsala is a city steeped in history, it also has a modern side that’s well worth exploring. On my fourth day, I spent some time at Uppsala University, Sweden’s oldest and one of the world’s leading research institutions. The University Library, also known as the Carolina Rediviva, was a highlight. It’s a beautiful neoclassical building, home to thousands of historical manuscripts and books. I felt like I was stepping into a world of knowledge, with the library’s vast collection spanning centuries of scholarly work.
I also explored the more contemporary side of Uppsala, with a visit to Svartbäcksgatan—one of the city’s coolest streets, full of quirky shops, art galleries, and cafés. Here, I found a boutique selling hand-crafted Swedish design items, perfect for picking up a unique souvenir.
In the evening, I visited Vasaparken, a lovely park with wide open spaces, perfect for enjoying the long summer evenings. I sat by the lake, watching families and students relax and enjoy the warm weather. The laid-back atmosphere of the park made it one of my favorite spots in the city.
Day 5: Nature and Outdoor Adventures
Sweden is known for its stunning nature, and Uppsala is no exception. On my fifth day, I set out to explore the beautiful Fyrisån River area. I rented a bike and followed the path that runs along the river, enjoying the lush greenery and fresh air. There’s something incredibly calming about cycling through the Swedish countryside, with the sound of the river flowing nearby and the scent of pine trees in the air.
After a few hours of cycling, I made my way to the Lilla Uppsala Nature Reserve, just a short distance from the city. The reserve is home to dense forests, wetlands, and wildlife, and it was the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. I spent the afternoon hiking through the reserve, taking in the tranquility of nature.
In the evening, I returned to the city and dined at one of Uppsala’s excellent restaurants, where I enjoyed traditional Swedish dishes. Swedish meatballs with lingonberry sauce became a favorite meal of mine during my stay, and the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant made it a perfect end to a day immersed in nature.

Day 6: The Uppsala Art Scene
Uppsala’s art scene is thriving, and on my sixth day, I took time to explore some of the city’s galleries. Uppsala Art Museum, located on the shores of Lake Ekoln, was a true gem. The museum showcases a diverse collection of Swedish and international contemporary art, and the building itself is an architectural masterpiece.
I spent the afternoon wandering through the museum’s various exhibits, which ranged from modern photography to sculptures and paintings. The peaceful setting by the lake made the experience even more enjoyable, as I took in the art while gazing out at the serene waters.
In the evening, I visited Kulturernas Hus, a cultural center that hosts performances, concerts, and other events. That evening, there was a live jazz performance, and I spent a couple of hours enjoying the music, surrounded by locals who were equally enchanted by the sounds of the evening.
Day 7: A Final Day in Uppsala
As my week in Uppsala came to a close, I took some time to reflect on everything I’d experienced. My final day was a relaxed one, starting with a leisurely breakfast at Café Linné—a charming spot known for its pastries and coffee. I spent the morning wandering through the streets one last time, soaking in the beauty of the city and the peaceful vibe that made Uppsala so special.
Before I left, I visited Uppsala University Botanical Garden, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Sweden. It was a fitting place to say goodbye, with its lush greenery and vibrant flowers offering a peaceful and beautiful end to my week in this enchanting city.
Uppsala had truly captured my heart, offering a perfect balance between ancient history and modern energy. The city’s unique atmosphere—where past and present coexist harmoniously—made it an unforgettable destination. From the awe-inspiring Uppsala Cathedral to the serene beauty of Linnaeus’ Garden, every corner of the city felt like a living testament to Sweden’s rich history and cultural heritage. Yet, it was equally modern, with trendy cafés, lively parks, and vibrant streets that breathed new life into the city’s age-old charm.
What I loved most about Uppsala was its seamless blend of nature and culture. The lush green parks, the peaceful banks of the Fyrisån River, and the quiet, serene nature reserves provided the perfect escape, while the city’s museums, galleries, and architectural wonders fed my curiosity and desire for learning. The slow pace and gentle vibe of Uppsala made it feel like a retreat, an antidote to the fast-paced world we often live in.
Whether you’re a history buff fascinated by ancient Viking sites, a nature lover who enjoys hiking and cycling through tranquil forests, or someone simply seeking a peaceful escape, Uppsala offers something for everyone. The city’s rich traditions, coupled with its youthful vibrancy, made it a place I will always remember fondly. Long after I leave its picturesque streets, the memories of Uppsala will continue to resonate with me, reminding me of the beauty and calm that this Swedish gem offers to all who visit.
